Someone Throw the Paladin a Life Preserver

After leaving the temple of Dalman, the party scouted through the city for information on where Fredric might have headed after taking the book from the Dalmanites. Following leads to a crazy mage living in a tower outside of the walls of Upper Arlen, the party was able to secure Fredric's journal.

The last few pages traced Fredric's last steps into the sewers to a forgotten temple beneath the city. After Krond convinced a fellow blacksmith to allow access into the sewers through his tool shed, the party made plans to follow Fredric into the sewers.

Before moving below the city, Ottan met with the old merchant who had a lead on the weapon the rogue was seeking. It turns out that the very same weapon Ottan sought had been left sticking out of the arse of a very pissed off ettin in the mountains south west of Upper Arlen.

Putting aside the search of Ottan;s prize, the party descended into the sewers on Fredric's trail. The party found no sign of Alessa's agent but did run into a group of zombies and a wraith that tried to drown Alan the paladin. After dispatching the undead, the party moved further into the sewers and found the entrance to the temple.

Krond recognized the bas-relief on the temple door as a god of automatons. True enough, when the party moved across the ante-room, the iron statutes rose to life and attacked. After a long battle, the party dispatched the guardians and camped in the ante-room, preparing to move deeper into the temple in search of the book Fredric sought.

The Session included 2 of 10 encounters toward Level 6.

Welcome to Fifth Level

With the encounters both in the dragon's lair finishing off the cult and in the city of Upper Arlen, the party has reached 5th level.

Welcome to the Temple of Dalman...Now it's a party.

After dispatching the lone sentry, the party trudged deeper into the frozen depths of the ice dragon's lair. Surprising a trio of guards worn down by the numbing cold, the party thought to make quick work of the checkpoint until the massive Short Timmy came strolling across to bridge to check on his underlings.

Timmy screamed curses the party could not hear because of the deafening noise of the waterfall and charged into the fight, swinging his massive hammer. Leaving the druid to keep Timmy busy, the party quickly killed off the unfortunate guards then turned their full attention to the hammer swinging giant.

Timmy waded into the midst of the party, slamming his hammer left and right. but the party proved resilient to his strength and slowly brought the huge human to his knees. Finally, the dwarf Krond held Timmy's hammer aloft in victory, the human mountain dead at the party's feet.

Donning the blood stained cult tunics no longer needed by the dead guards, the party started over the stone bridge spanning the black chasm. On the opposite side, the party interrupted a strange ritual. Runes of blood painted around a bloody circle, a virgin in shackles and a hooded villain lording over his minions.

Oh yeah baby, now it's a dungeon crawl!!!

Fooled by the party's disguise, the warlock Cylus believed the party to be more of his duped minions bringing him another virgin to sacrifice. A mistake he payed for dearly after the rogue got all stabby-stabby with his face. As the party watched in horror, the wretched Cylus used the last of his strength to force Ottan over the edge of chasm.

The remaining ritualists, no longer under the charismatic spell of the dead Cylus, lost all heart for battle and surrendered. The virgin, identifying herself as Moureen, daughter of the Second Bellows of The Harrows Smithy guild, thanked the party for her rescue and begged for safe passage back to her father in Upper Arlen. The party then rescued the lucky rogue who had somehow escaped death by the fortunate trick of having his ankle get jammed in a crevasse of the cavern wall.

After retrieving the Eye of Marcellus from the cult leader's dead body, the party set off for the walled city of Upper Arlen to return the Eye and deliver the pretty young virgin back to her family.

By delivering the Eye of Marcellus back to Master Fillman, the party made, if not a friend, at the least a patron of one of the most powerful men in the Upper Harrow Valley. With the heirloom returned, the party succeeded in reopening the gates of the city, earning the gratitude of the local merchants and citizenry. Of course, as we shall see, fame carries certain dangers.

With the coming nightfall, Ottan headed out in search of a certain weapon. He found a kindly old merchant that sent a pigeon off in search of the blade. With his business completed, the rogue joined the party for a well deserved rest in soft warm beds.

The next morning, while enjoying breakfast at the Well-Kept Lady tavern, the party was joined by Kaless, a finely dressed, polished gentleman. Immediately, Ottan sensed danger in the man's appearance. Closer inspection during the casual conversation convinced Ottan that the party's morning companion was a high level member of a thieving company.

Soon enough, the polite discussion turned to Kaless's real purpose. Believing himself the true owner of the Polian family ring due to the rather intricate rules of thieving honor, Kaless requested the return of his stolen property. With Ottan's refusal on the grounds that he no longer possessed the ring, the thief master wished the party safe travels and left them to finish their meal in peace.

After breakfast, the party followed up on a lead involving the Lady Alessa's agent. First, they met with a flustered caravan merchant who confirmed that he had three strangers as passengers on the last caravan into the city before the gates were closed by the duke's decree. The party narrowed the choice to a man who had expressed interest in the Temple of Dalman, the god of perversity.

On the way to the temple, the party ran into the grateful dwarven smith, Gorak, who thanked them profusely for saving his adopted daughter from being a virgin sacrifice. After finding out Krond had training in the smithy arts, Gorak invited his fellow dwarf to visit him at the smithy hall.

The party continued onto the temple where they were confronted by a large fountain of the god Dalman sporting a three foot marble penis. With the paladin and rogue deciding to stay outside the temple confines, Mirri, Amara and Krond approached the pink marble temple and knocked on the large brass door. When an ancient, naked woman with boobs hanging down to her belly button answered the knock, the dwarf had his fill of that type of perversion, re-joining his compatriots outside the temple gate while the ladies met with the head mistress and alchemist.

After questioning the temple matrons, the warlock and druid discovered that the man they now knew as Fredric had been asking after certain practices involving poisons that have long been outlawed by the temple. Their last word had Fredric borrowing an old alchemy text, promising to return the tome within a fortnight. They have not seen the man since.
